Travel Outfit Guide 2024: How to Pack Light and Stay Chic

Travel outfit guide 2024: how to pack light and stay chic for a 1-2 week long vacation.

A fun getaway? Yes, please!

I’m recently back from an amazing 9-day kid-free girls’ trip adventure in London and Rome—my first time away from home for that long since becoming a mom 13 years ago. And wow, did I need it.

If you’re like me, you are always on the go. Whether it’s hustling for our careers, our families, or just daily life … we often put our own wants and needs last.

This trip was different; it was just for me. I got to do what I wanted when I wanted, and how I wanted—no second opinions, just pure self-indulgence. Selfish? Absolutely, and I relished every moment of it!

But here's something interesting: even as someone who advises others on packing light and right, I somehow find myself tangled in a web of overpacking! I mean “the stylist” always has to be fully prepared to dress for anything, right? Despite pre-planning and picking out outfits weeks in advance, even taking outfit pictures, I often fall into the trap of over packing.

This time, I aimed for a minimalist approach, attempting the 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule. Familiar? It’s a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe concept created by influencers —five tops, four bottoms, three layering items, two pairs of shoes, and one dress. Sounds ideal, right? Not quite. The cooler-than-expected weather in Rome, complete with unexpected hail, totally threw me off. How can you pack light and be prepared for temp changes within 20 degrees ranging day to day?!  Ughhh. (Keep reading until the end to be in the know about some personalized picks I found for you for travel this summer!)

So, what’s the takeaway? If you’re someone who loves options like me, the 5-4-3-2-1 rule might be too restrictive.

Here’s my revised strategy for a 1-2 week trip: The “88-44-22 rule”. And no, I’m not suggesting packing 88 items! Instead, think 8 tops and 8 accessories, 4 bottoms and 4 layers, 2 dresses and 2 shoe options. (Technically, the pair of shoes that you wear on the plane doesn't count as your 2). Ideally, you want all of these items to pair well together, ensuring you're prepared for any weather or occasion without overpacking.

From unexpected weather to realizing that my comfy gold Converse sneakers were almost all I wore, this trip was a clear reminder that sometimes, less truly is more.

Before departing I had visions of zipping around Rome on a Vespa in a cute spring dress, light jacket, and killer sunnies. But reality had other plans—like borrowing a proper winter coat from my girlfriend in London!

Here are my top 5 fav picks I found most useful for my solo getaway.  I think you’ll like them too!

  1. Essential Ease: The Chic Crossbody Bag

This is not the belt bag a 16-year-old would wear, but this All Saints Half Moon Sling “adult” crossbody keeps all valuables close, has enough room for the essentials, is hands-free … and of course, stylish.

2. Multifaceted Protection: Slick Sunglasses

I wear sunglasses even when it's cloudy in the winter. My husband makes fun of me, but so what? Less squinting is great for wrinkle-prevention.  Besides, a simple pair can elevate the most basic look and disguise jet-lagged eyes. I have designer and affordable sunglasses, but I always seem to reach for my Sojos.

3. Fashion’s One Stop Shop: The Day-to-Night Dress

Whether you pair it with an edgy cropped jean jacket and sneakers or combat boots, or with a dressier layering option and heeled sandals, a versatile dress, like this one from DISSH, can go a long way.  Make sure to choose breathable, light fabrics. Dresses make for easy outfits, since you’re one and done.

Travel outfit guide 2024: light cream blazer from Central Park West

4. The Ultimate Layer: Lightweight Blazer

I did a post on this jacket pictured on LinkedIn recently. I think I may have worn it almost every day. It can even be dressed up with jeans or tailored shorts. It provides endless options and is ridiculously versatile. Aim for a neutral version so you can pair it with patterns or pops of color in other parts of your outfit. The relaxed boyfriend silhouette, with the slight nip in the waist of this cream blazer by Central Park West, will flatter any figure.

5. Best Foot Forward: The Cool Walking Shoe/Sneaker

A cool sneaker or chic walking sandal is a game changer when you’re walking all day. My trusty gold Cons were the perfect fit for this trip. But I also love these cool Birkenstocks, or their thinner strap Franca style, which aren’t your average old-school hippie version.

As we step into warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to reassess our wardrobes. Whether you're planning a solo Eat, Love, Pray getaway, a family beach vacation, or are just looking to streamline your style at home, consider what you really need and love
