Fall 2024 Sweaters to Wear from Work to Weekend: What to Buy, How to Style, and Where to Find Them
It’s Sweater Weather in NYC!
Who doesn’t love warm summer days?
But when Fall first hits NYC, I have to say I look forward to the crispness in the air, warm autumn colors, and throwing on my fave boots and cashmere sweaters. There’s nothing like that cozy sweater feeling. It’s like a nostalgic hug.
If you’re anything like my clients, your sweaters could probably use a refresh. I find most women tend to buy the same type of sweater over and over again, even when they feel like they’re buying something different. I mean, the same crewneck pullover isn‘t really helping you add variety to your closet if they’re all just different colors.
No judgment though. EVERYONE does it.
Before adding another sweater to the mix, I want to help you build a wardrobe of pieces that actually work, not just fill your closet with more of the same.
More Than Just Cozy—Here’s How To Choose The Right Sweaters This Season
It’s a no-brainer that sweaters keep us warm, but they can also set the tone for a look. From the office to weekend dates and sporty outings with the kiddos, they can be a whole vibe.
Here are five things you need to know before coveting that next cozy knit:
1. Avoid The Boxy Trap: How To Choose Flattering Sweater Fits
Oversized sweaters can look great, but some can overwhelm certain body types if not styled right. For work? Avoid overly boxy cuts to prevent the dreaded "sweater tent" look.
If you like that more relaxed fit, consider a polished cropped V-neck like this one from Tuckernuck. You balance out the volume by opening up the neckline and shortening the hem. Boxy styles aren’t typically ideal for the office. Instead, go for sweaters with more shape or structure, like this one from MMLaFleur. You can also try half-tucking some oversized versions into high-waisted pants. Experiment with different fits and necklines to discover which shapes flatter your torso and overall body type best.
2. Chunky Knit vs. Fine Knit: The Perfect Sweater Texture For Any Occasion
Chunky knits give off a relaxed, casual feel—perfect for weekends. Check out this gorgeous forest green beauty from Sezane. For the office or layering? Fine knits are your go-to, bringing polish without the bulk.
Wear chunky knits with fitted underlayers (think a thin tee or tailored button-up) for balance. On the other hand, fine knits are so chic under leather, textured blazers, or thicker coats. A lightweight cashmere tee/polo layers perfectly under thicker layers, and adds a bit of effortless sophistication to your look, perfect for the office. If you’ve never tried a cashmere tee, check out this affordable option from Quince – trust me on this, you won’t want to take it off!
3. Sweater Length & Layering 101: Find Your Ideal Fit
Cropped and longer sweaters each have their magic. When I say cropped, I don't mean super short belly-baring midriffs. For us grown-ups, cropped options (depending on the length) can define the waist and create balance for shorter torsos while looking more modern than long length sweaters. Even if you’re curvier, a stylish cropped sweater with high-waisted bottoms can flatter your waist without bulk. Stick to a longer style over slim/skinny or straight-leg pants for a sleek, streamlined look. Just keep in mind you don't want to go too long and casual, or you can shorten the appearance of your frame, or risk looking frumpy.
4. Fall’s Most Flattering Sweaters: Styles That Smooth & Conceal the Midsection
A well-fitting sweater should skim your body without clinging or sagging—providing just enough structure to highlight your shape, but loose enough for comfort. Look for subtle waist definition, like this wrap option from And Other Stories, that keep it effortlessly comfortable, giving off a put-together feel.
Quick Tip: If it feels clingy in the wrong places, get rid of it. Aim for styles that fit comfortably across your shoulders, don’t pull, and lightly drape over challenging areas.
5. Neckline Know-How: How To Find The Most Flattering Sweater Necklines For Your Body Type
V-necks are a versatile great choice—they layer easily over collared shirts for the office, or are great when worn solo for a night out showing a little skin. V-necks also elongate the body more than a crew. Fine knit turtlenecks are your go-to for warmth and add a chic, cozy look under blazers. But don’t be afraid to shake things up! A slim square or asymmetrical neckline knit can add a classy edge to your office look. As long as it’s not too low, it’s a sleek alternative to the standard crew or collared blouse.
Experiment with something fresh and new! Different necklines bring effortless versatility to any wardrobe.
Before you buy another sweater, keep these tips in mind and you’ll be golden. But before you hit that purchase button, It's a good idea to assess what you already own.
Fun with Sweater Weather—Clean Out & Keep Only What You Love
Don’t let your closet overwhelm you or hold you back. This season, let’s get intentional about keeping only what you’ll actually wear, what fits, and what you love.
If you’re stuck on what to keep or purge, here’s what I advise clients to get rid of immediately:
Ditch Anything Beyond Repair: That beloved sweater with holes or snags? It’s time to say goodbye. I know this seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many hold on to what needs to be let go.
Use a Sweater Shaver: Don’t toss a great piece just because of a little pilling. I love love this trusty shaver by Nori, a sweater saver!
Trust the “Feel-Good” Test: If it doesn’t feel right (itchy, too hot, or just flat-out uncomfortable), LET. IT. GO. If it doesn’t pass the comfort test, it’s not worth keeping. Life’s too short to feel uncomfortable in your clothes.
“Let it go, let it go…” you know the tune. Let’s make space for pieces that really work for you.
